Gevrey Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Tortochot

Score: BH89
A discreet if easily discernible dollop of wood is present on the spicy nose of wild red berries that are nuanced by hints of the sauvage, spice and newly turned earth. The succulent and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess better mid-palate density thanks to the old vine sap that also serves to buffer the punchy, saline and firm finale. This is also a very good Gevrey villages and one to consider if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a few years. *Outstanding*

*Organic* The history of the domain dates back to 1865 and since 1997 Chantal Tortochot has revived this important Burgundian estate in Gevrey Chambertin since taking over from her father, Gabriel. Her skillful winemaking has produced a range of lively, inexpensive, fruit-laden wines which are accessible, young and yet promise to develop well over several years. Since 2013 the vineyards are certified organic, their winemaking practice is to 100% de-stem, with 25% new oak for village, 50% for 1er Cru, and upto 100% for the Grand Cru. The jewels in the crown are the well situated Premier Cru vineyards Lavaux St Jacques, Champeaux, and the Grand Crus Mazis Chambertin, Charmes Chambertin and a morsel of the king of wines, Chambertin itself. |
