Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Tortochot

Score: NM94-96
The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru looks extremely promising. Backward yet enticing on the nose, it is laden with tertiary red fruit and quite loamy, but the terroir floods through here. The palate is well-balanced with an almost citric spine of acidity, counter balancing the density and power of this Mazis. Tangible mineralité on the finish, this is an excellent Mazis-Chamberting from Tortochot.

*Organic* The history of the domain dates back to 1865 and since 1997 Chantal Tortochot has revived this important Burgundian estate in Gevrey Chambertin since taking over from her father, Gabriel. Her skillful winemaking has produced a range of lively, inexpensive, fruit-laden wines which are accessible, young and yet promise to develop well over several years. Since 2013 the vineyards are certified organic, their winemaking practice is to 100% de-stem, with 25% new oak for village, 50% for 1er Cru, and upto 100% for the Grand Cru. The jewels in the crown are the well situated Premier Cru vineyards Lavaux St Jacques, Champeaux, and the Grand Crus Mazis Chambertin, Charmes Chambertin and a morsel of the king of wines, Chambertin itself. |
