Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve, Errazuriz

Vintage 2013
1.5 L

HK$998.00

Score: WA93

The 2013 Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve, sourced from a cool vintage, is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carménère and 5% Petit Verdot; it fermented in small stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels (65% new) for 22 moths. It has a very classical nose, a Bordeaux blend with aromas of blackberries, faint balsamic notes, cedar wood, graphite, cigar box, cracked peppercorns and tobacco leaves. It has a lot less new oak than the vintages of yesteryear. The palate is medium to full-bodied with the telltale Cabernet tannins, juicy fruit, and tension keeping the freshness balancing the sweet fruit. One of the finest versions of Don Maximiano. 73,800 bottled in March 2015.

Producer Info Viña Errázuriz was founded by Don Maximiano Errázuriz in 1870. With his great vision for the future and his innovative, pioneering spirit, Don Maximiano Errázuriz planted the first French grape varieties in the Aconcagua Valley. His initiative and creativity were handed down to future generations and, in just over a century, his descendants consolidated the winery and positioned their wines among the world’s most noteworthy.

Located just 90 kilometres north of Santiago, Chile’s capital, the traditional Aconcagua Valley is the last of the country’s transversal valleys. Its basin is shaped by the Aconcagua River, which flows from the Andes Mountain Range into the Pacific Ocean. The riverbanks are formed by alluvial and colluvial terraces, ideal for growing the finest grape varieties.

The valley’s mild Mediterranean climate, which features an extended dry season and rains concentrated mainly in winter, and the easy access to water for irrigation, as well as the volcanic and colluvial origin of its soils, make Aconcagua a real viticultural paradise. From the mountains to the coast, this has been the origin of many of the most renowned Chilean wines.

Errazuriz’s wines are popular at all price levels and the icon wines have gained particular acclaims. The wines also stand out in a series of blind tastings, where Errazuriz has achieved great success against wines from notable old world producers.
