Sonhador, Howard’s Folly
Vintage 2012

The 2012 Tinto Sonhador Howard’s Folly is a blend of Syrah (50%), Alicante Bouchet (40%) and Touriga Nacional (10%), aged for nine months in a 60/40 mixture of new and used oak (half French, half American). It comes in at 14% alcohol. All sourced from Portalegre at 500 meters high, this is what people say you should get in this cooler subregion in the northeastern end of Alentejo. The wine is bright and silky, high in acidity, moderate in depth and without a trace of jam. It is more Dão than stereotypical Alentejo. Showing a little tart on opening, it pulls that in but then adds some power. Laced with attractive black cherry nuances on the tight, tense and gripping finish, this is very much a food wine. It doesn’t lack for intensity of flavor, but the flavors are always lifted and it revolves around its structure. It has a very cool climate feel to it. I really liked this well-priced Tinto, but remember that it will likely do best with food. This is a late but current release.

| Producer Info | Howard’s Folly is a boutique producer of wine from Portugal, based in the beautiful and historic town of Estremoz, the Alentejo region. Their main vineyard is 7 hectares of 20-25 year old vines in Portalegre, deep in the Alentejo countryside, where the climate is cooler. This allows Howard’s Folly to make wines with superior freshness, elegance and finesse.
There are 342 different grape varieties permitted in Portugal of which 250 are indigenous. Howard’s Folly uses local varietals either blended or occasionally on their own. An innovative partnership between Chief Winemaker, David Baverstock, and entrepreneur, Howard Bilton, and their joint passion to unlock the best of Portugal’s grape varietals, have resulted in consistent production of award winning wines. The co-founder and chief winemaker, David Baverstock, is an Australian by nationality but long time Portuguese resident who is credited with revolutionizing the Portuguese wine industry by introducing new world techniques to old world material. He has won the Portuguese Red Wine Trophy at both the 1999 and 2002 International Wine Challenges, as well as winemaker of the year (Portugal) in 2013 and 2015, the only non Portuguese winemaker to do so. |
